What can I say when my child complains walks are boring compared to shopping malls?

Parenting Perspective

When a child openly voices the opinion that walks are inherently boring, the emotional core often includes a clear sense of comparison, expectation, and a desire for immediate gratification. Shopping malls are purposely filled with bright, constantly changing colours, high energy sounds, and perpetual novelty, while nature often appears quieter, slower, and more subtle by contrast. Validating their feelings first reduces their immediate defensiveness: ‘I hear that you feel the mall is more exciting because there is so much happening there all at once.’ This simple acknowledgment successfully opens a door for genuine curiosity and reflection, allowing you to gently guide your child toward recognising lasting richness in subtlety.

Highlight Hidden Adventures

Invite your child to actively discover small, unexpected surprises in nature: an unusual leaf shape, a cleverly hidden bird’s nest, or the intricate work of insects. Encourage observation through playful questions: ‘Can you find something that moves in a way you have never noticed before?’ or ‘Which single colour on this walk looks the most surprising or unexpected to you?’

  • Micro action: Pick one small focus object, a single leaf, a smooth rock, or a specific flower, and together spend two full minutes observing it carefully.
  • Parent script: ‘Let us see if we can spot something completely new just by looking really closely at this one specific leaf.’ This activity cultivates a strong sense of active engagement, clearly showing them that genuine excitement can be found in careful noticing rather than external acquiring.

Make Choice and Agency Part of the Experience

Allowing children to have the freedom to select the walking route, control the pace, or determine the focus of the walk gives them true ownership and makes the entire experience feel significantly more dynamic. If they lead, even for a few short steps, their attention and enjoyment levels naturally increase. Gentle prompts to notice specific patterns, interesting shapes, or unique sounds can subtly turn the walk into a fulfilling mini adventure without ever making it feel like structured, mandatory learning. Over time, children begin to internalise the important truth that novelty and lasting joy can reliably emerge from quiet attentiveness, helping them to appreciate outdoor experiences as rich in ways that distinctly differ from the fast paced shopping centres.

Spiritual Insight

Islam actively encourages the conscious noticing of Allah Almighty’s creation with deep reflection, patience, and sincere gratitude. By thoughtfully guiding children to seek and find wonder in nature’s subtleties, parents successfully help them cultivate inner contentment and profound mindfulness rather than a constant, restless craving for manufactured novelty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran in Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 164:

‘Indeed, in  the creation of the layers of trans-universal existence and the Earth; and the alternation in the night and day; and the vessels that cruise on the rivers through which mankind profits; and that which Allah (Almighty) transmits from the sky; from water from that gives life to everything on the Earth after it had been lifeless; and providing therein creatures of every kind; and controlling the winds and the clouds, (in the designed pathway) between the sky and the Earth; these are the Signs (of the infinite truth) for those nations that wish to understand (through logic and reason).’

Even a quiet, simple walk allows children the opportunity to observe these powerful signs, connecting their sensory experience with reflection and genuine awe.

It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawud, Hadith 4811, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘He who does not show gratitude for small things will not be grateful for large things.‘

By consistently drawing their attention to small, humble wonders, such as leaves, birds, or unique textures, parents successfully help children develop essential appreciation, patience, and dedication to mindfulness. Nature transforms into a peaceful space where profound contentment naturally grows, clearly showing them that joy does not always require the intense stimulation of a mall but is readily available through careful observation and mindful engagement. Through these repeated positive experiences, children successfully learn that discovery, deep calm, and strong curiosity are just as rewarding as external entertainments.
