Parenting Perspective
Mistakes are Natural
Explaining forgiveness and the concept of trying again is essential for helping your child to develop resilience, emotional growth, and empathy. You can start by teaching your child that making mistakes is a natural part of being human and that forgiveness is a way to learn, grow, and move forward. For example, you could say, ‘We all make mistakes, but what is important is that we learn from them and try again. Allah is always ready to forgive us, and we should forgive ourselves and others too.’
Forgiveness is About Letting Go
Help your child to understand that forgiveness is not about forgetting a mistake but about letting go of negative feelings, such as anger or guilt. You can explain that forgiving themselves and others creates space for healing and improvement. You can use simple examples from everyday life, such as forgiving a friend who has accidentally hurt their feelings, to show them how to practice forgiveness.
Trying Again is a Sign of Strength
Teach your child that trying again after a mistake is a sign of strength and determination. Reinforce the idea that they do not need to be perfect, and that what matters most is their effort to improve. For example, ‘It is okay if things did not go as planned. You can always try again and do better next time. The important thing is not to give up.’ You can also encourage your child to seek forgiveness from Allah through Dua (supplication) and to ask for help in doing better.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, forgiveness and repentance are deeply valued. Allah Almighty teaches us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verse 70:
‘Except for the one who sought repentance, and believed (in the truth), and enacted virtuous deeds; so for those people, Allah (Almighty) shall substitute (and extinguish) their evil deeds with good deeds; and Allah (Almighty) is All Forgiving and All Merciful.’
This verse illustrates the importance of repentance and seeking forgiveness, showing that Allah is always ready to forgive those who sincerely turn to Him.
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ also emphasised the importance of forgiveness and of trying again. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6594, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.’
This Hadith teaches us that seeking forgiveness and striving to improve are essential parts of growing as individuals. By explaining to your child that forgiveness and trying again are opportunities for growth, you are teaching them to align with the Islamic values of humility, self-improvement, and trust in Allah’s mercy.
