What do I do if my child talks to strangers online?

Parenting Perspective

Have a Calm Discussion

If your child is talking to strangers online, it is important to approach the situation calmly and with understanding, while also setting clear guidelines for their safety. You can start by discussing the situation with your child in a non-confrontational way, aiming to understand how and why they were engaging with strangers. You might say, ‘I understand you may be talking to people online, but it is important to remember that not everyone is who they say they are. We need to be very careful about who we communicate with.’

Explain the Risks

Teach your child about the risks of interacting with strangers online, explaining that some people may not have good intentions. Help them to understand that people they meet online can easily pretend to be someone else. ‘Strangers online can pretend to be your friend, but we cannot know for sure who they really are. That is why we need to be careful.’

Praise Honesty and Openness

Set clear rules for your child about online communication, such as not talking to strangers and not sharing personal information like their full name, address, or school. Teach them to come to you if they encounter any situation that makes them feel uncomfortable. You might say, ‘If anyone online makes you feel uneasy, it is important that you tell me immediately, and we will figure it out together.’ Finally, praise your child for coming to you if something uncomfortable happens, as this encourages them to speak up if they feel unsafe.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, safeguarding oneself from harm and acting responsibly are core principles, especially when it comes to our interactions with others. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 12:

‘Those of you who have believed, abstain as much as you can from cynical thinking (about one another); as some of that cynical thinking is a sin; and do not spy (on each other) and do not let some of you backbite against others….’

This verse teaches us to be cautious in our interactions, ensuring that they align with good intentions and integrity.

The holy Prophet Muhammad  also encouraged us to protect our privacy and to avoid unnecessary exposure to harm. It is recorded in Sunan Abi Dawood, Hadith 3252, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  stated:

‘Speak the truth, even if it is bitter.’

This Hadith encourages honesty and caution in all our interactions, including those that are online. By teaching your child not to talk to strangers on the internet, you are helping them to safeguard their well-being in line with the Islamic principles of caution and integrity.
