What can I say if my child lies to fit in with friends?

Parenting Perspective

Reassure Them They Do Not Need to Lie

When a child lies to fit in with their friends, it is essential to address the issue with understanding and care. Children may feel the need to lie because they fear rejection or want to be accepted by their peers. The first step is to reassure your child that they do not need to lie to be liked or to fit in. You can help them to understand that true friends will appreciate them for who they are, not for who they pretend to be. You might say, ‘You do not need to change who you are to fit in. The best friends will like you for being yourself.’

Explain the Impact of Lying

Once your child understands that fitting in does not require dishonesty, you can explain the impact of lying. You could say, ‘When you lie to your friends, it can break their trust and make it difficult to build real relationships.’ Help your child to understand that honesty is essential for building strong friendships. Teach them that while telling the truth might feel uncomfortable at first, it is always the best choice in the long run.

Praise Honesty

It is also important to praise your child when they tell the truth, even in challenging situations. Positive reinforcement encourages your child to continue being honest and builds their confidence in their ability to navigate social situations without resorting to lies. If your child does lie, calmly address the situation, ask them why they felt the need to do so, and guide them toward making better choices in the future.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, honesty is a core value, and lying to fit in or to gain the approval of others is strongly discouraged. Allah Almighty reminds us in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 42:

‘And do not mix the truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth, and you are fully aware (of what you are doing).’

This verse teaches us that truthfulness is a critical part of maintaining integrity and righteousness, and that lying undermines these values.

The holy Prophet Muhammad  also emphasised the importance of truthfulness. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 6594, that the holy Prophet Muhammad  said:

‘Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise.’

This Hadith serves as a reminder that honesty, even when it is difficult, is always the best choice. By guiding your child to embrace honesty and discouraging them from lying to fit in, you are teaching them to live in accordance with the teachings of Islam, building strong relationships based on trust, respect, and truth.
