Parenting Perspective
Consistency is one of the most challenging aspects of parenting, especially when children test the same limits repeatedly. It is natural to feel a mix of frustration, doubt, and guilt, and to ask yourself: ‘Am I being too strict?’. Recognising this emotional strain is the first step. Inconsistency signals to a child that rules are negotiable, which can weaken both your authority and their trust in you.
Anchor in Your Purpose
To stay strong, you must be clear on the deeper reason behind the boundary. If the rule is about screen time, remind yourself that it protects your child’s sleep, focus, or family connection. This internal anchor gives your resolve a clear and practical foundation, turning the boundary from a power struggle into an act of care. You might even state it simply: ‘I am keeping this rule because it helps you feel rested and ready for tomorrow’.
Track Progress and Small Wins
Holding a boundary can be exhausting, so it is important to notice and celebrate incremental improvements, however tiny they seem. Did your child wait five extra minutes before asking? Did they accept the limit with less protest than yesterday? Acknowledging these small wins, even just to yourself, can help you stay motivated and reduce the fatigue that comes from repeated enforcement.
Use Consistent, Calm Reminders
Instead of repeating long explanations, which can drain your patience, use short, predictable cues. A single, calm reminder like, ‘It is not screening time yet’, said in the same neutral tone each day, maintains the boundary without escalating the situation. Calm repetition is far more effective than an emotional lecture and reinforces the rule without diluting its purpose.
Spiritual Insight
Holding firm with patience and wisdom is a quality deeply valued in Islam. Steadfastness in providing gentle guidance is seen to nurture righteousness and a sense of responsibility in children.
The Certainty of Guidance
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 2:
‘This is a Book (Quran) in which there cannot be any doubt; guidance for those who seek piety.‘
Just as Allah’s guidance is clear and unwavering, our boundaries should also be clear and reliable. Every small, consistent act of guidance is part of nurturing a conscious, responsible, and secure child who understands the importance of limits.
The Value of Consistency
It is recorded in Sunan Nisai, Hadith 762, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The most beloved of deeds to Allah are those which are done consistently, even if they are few…’
This hadith is a powerful reminder for parents. Maintaining boundaries with calmness and consistency is a beloved deed. It models patience, reliability, and strength of character, showing children that love and rules can and should coexist in harmony. Your perseverance in this small, consistent act has enduring value.
