Parenting Perspective
Holding boundaries is crucial for a child’s development, but it is vital that these limits are not established through fear. The key is to set clear, consistent rules while maintaining a compassionate and supportive relationship. Children thrive when they understand the purpose behind a rule and feel their emotions are heard, even during discipline. A balance must be struck where boundaries are understood to be for their well-being, not as a means of control.
Show Understanding, Not Control
When enforcing a boundary, calmly explain its importance. Instead of saying, ‘Because I said so’, try, ‘I understand you want to play, but this boundary is here to keep you safe’. This approach helps your child feel respected and informed, rather than controlled. It is also important to respect their growing autonomy, guiding them towards safe choices while acknowledging their independence.
Encourage Dialogue Over Fear
Engage your child in conversations about boundaries. Encourage them to express their feelings about the rules and listen carefully without reacting harshly. This reduces resentment and fear. You might say, ‘I know you are upset about this rule, but let us talk about why it is important’. Open discussions foster an environment of trust where your child feels safe to express their emotions. This teaches them that boundaries are not about control, but about protection and guidance.
Spiritual Insight
Islamic teachings emphasise balance in all aspects of life, including discipline. While setting and upholding boundaries is crucial, it must be done with the kindness and justice exemplified by the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. Parents should strive to reflect Allah’s mercy and wisdom in their approach.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Aalai Imran (3), Verses 159:
‘ So, it is by the mercy from Allah (Almighty) that you (O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ) are lenient with them; and if you had been harsh (in your speech) or restrained (in your heart), they would have dispersed from around you…’
This verse shows that kindness is the key to maintaining strong, loving relationships. If the Prophet ﷺ was instructed to be lenient and merciful, we too should aim for this approach when setting boundaries with our children. Enforcing rules with love encourages respect rather than fear.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2018, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘The most beloved of you to me and the nearest to me on the Day of Judgement will be the ones with the best character.’
This hadith reinforces that good character, which includes kindness and fairness in setting rules, is what draws a person closer to Allah Almighty. By applying this principle in our parenting, we not only teach our children to respect boundaries but also model the best conduct for their own spiritual and personal growth.
