What should parents do if a child uses technical jargon to shut down conversations about limits?

Parenting Perspective

It is a common tactic for tech-savvy children to use complicated technical jargon as a way to confuse their parents and shut down conversations about rules. Phrases like, ‘You do not understand how the algorithm works,’ can be used to make parents feel powerless. It is important to remember that parental guidance is not about mastering every technical term; it is about setting and upholding family values with clarity and confidence.

Do Not Get Lost in the Jargon

Avoid getting drawn into a debate about the technicalities. Instead, calmly redirect the conversation back to what matters: ‘Even if I do not understand that specific term, I do understand the impact that this is having on your time, your behaviour, and our family values.’ This keeps the conversation focused on outcomes, not details

Ask Them to Simplify

You can invite your child to explain the term in a way you can understand: ‘Can you put that in simple words for me?’ This approach serves two purposes: it cuts through avoidance by showing you are not intimidated, and it also encourages them to reflect on whether they are using the jargon as a genuine explanation or simply as a way of dodging the rules.

Bring the Focus Back to Values

Gently but firmly remind them of the foundation of your household rules. You could say: ‘The rules in our family are not based on technical terms. They are based on our shared values of safety, balance, and respect for one another.’ This prevents them from derailing important conversations with unnecessary complexity

Stay Consistent in Your Boundaries

Whether you fully understand a platform’s features or not, your core family rules regarding screen time limits, bedtime curfews, and respect for Islamic values should remain non-negotiable. Your consistency reinforces the message that your parental guidance is rooted in wisdom, not jargon

By refusing to be intimidated by technical language and by calmly holding your ground, you can show your child that your authority rests on care and principle, not on winning a technical debate.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches that our speech should always be clear and sincere, and it should never be used as a tool to confuse or deceive others. Using complicated language to shut down meaningful guidance from a parent is contrary to the principles of good adab (manners).

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verses 42:

And do not mix the truth with falsehood, and do not conceal the truth, and you are fully aware (of what you are doing).

This verse is a clear command for honesty and clarity in our communication. It reminds us that we should not use our words to create confusion or to avoid the truth.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 55, that the holy Prophet Muhammad said:

‘The religion is sincere advice.’

This profound teaching establishes that our conversations, especially those between a parent and child, must be rooted in honesty and a sincere desire for what is best, not in clever wordplay or attempts to avoid responsibility.

By grounding your family’s communication in the principle of sincerity, you can teach your children that technical knowledge should not be used as a tool to dodge guidance. Over time, they will learn that respectful and honest dialogue is far more powerful than jargon, and that your family rules stand firm on timeless values, not on fleeting technical details.
