The Importance of a Healthy Iftar
Our bodies and our health are an Amaanah (Trust) from Allah Almighty, our Creator, and it is our responsibility to care for them through thoughtful and responsible choices. This includes being mindful of what we eat and drink, when we eat and drink, and the way in which we nourish ourselves. This helps cultivate self-discipline, teaching us to pause, reflect, and act with intention rather than be tripped up by impulse or feeling unprepared.
Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ advised us of this balanced approach in his teachings on eating and drinking. It is reported in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2380 that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
مَا مَلَأَ آدَمِيٌّ وِعَاءً شَرًّا مِنْ بَطْنٍ، بِحَسْبِ ابْنِ آدَمَ لُقَيْمَاتٌ
يُقِمْنَ صُلْبَهُ، فَإِنْ كَانَ لَا مَحَالَةَ، فَثُلُثٌ لِطَعَامِهِ، وَثُلُثٌ
لِشَرَابِهِ، وَثُلُثٌ لِنَفَسِهِ
“The human does not fill any container that is worse than his stomach. It is sufficient for the offspring of Adam to eat what will support his back. If this is not possible, then a third for food, a third for drink, and third for his breath.”
This guidance reminds us not to eat to the point of excess, but to practise balance by filling only a portion of the stomach with food, a portion with drink, and leaving a portion empty. In doing so, we guard ourselves against greed, unhealthy weight gain, and the sluggishness that comes from overeating.
How to Make Iftar Healthy – Mind, Body and Soul
Many people wonder what to prepare for Iftar and often find it challenging to create healthy meals. Busy schedules, the tiredness that comes after a full day of fasting, and the responsibility of feeding large families can all make thoughtful meal planning feel overwhelming. In many cultures, Iftar can easily become a time for quick, convenient, and indulgent foods that, while comforting, are not always the healthiest choices.
Yet fasting and Iftar are not meant to be a moment of overindulgence after a day of abstinence, nor should it be simply about a health trend.
Iftar is a time for gratitude, connection, and nourishing the body with what is truly beneficial.
Below are some healthy Ramadan meal ideas and easy recipes for Iftar designed to save time without compromising on flavour or nutrition. For those already on a health journey, or looking to begin one, we have also included nutritional details to help support balanced and mindful eating.
