Should I get a speech therapist if we speak more than one language?

Parenting Perspective

Finding the Right Support

If you are worried about your child’s speech and you speak more than one language at home, working with a speech therapist can be very helpful. Many parents fear that a therapist will tell them to drop their home language, but an experienced therapist should understand how bilingual families work. Before choosing someone, ask whether they have supported bilingual children before.

Be clear about which languages you use at home, which one your child feels strongest in, and what challenges you see, such as mixing languages, delayed speech, or difficulty pronouncing certain words. Good therapists will not expect your child to speak perfectly straight away but will help you to find ways to practise words naturally during daily routines. They might give you ideas like using picture cards, simple repetition, or signs to help your child express themselves. Remember, you are the expert on your child, so keep using your home language warmly at home while following the therapist’s guidance. A calm, trusting approach shows your child that learning to speak well is a team effort, not something to fear.

Spiritual Insight

Seeking Help is a Strength

Islam encourages us to seek help and advice when we need it. Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286:

‘Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity…’

This beautiful verse reminds you that seeking help does not mean you are failing as a parent; it means you trust that every good step, when done with Sabr and Tawakkul, is guided by Allah Almighty’s mercy.

Make it Easy

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always encouraged people to ask questions and get the help they needed with kindness. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’

A good therapist should make things easier for you and your child, not add to your stress. Make Dua that Allah Almighty connects you with professionals who understand your family’s language and faith needs. Keep reminding yourself that using more than one language is not a burden but a blessing, and that your gentle support, with the right help, will grow your child’s confidence, one word at a time.
