Should I encourage my child to play with kids who speak other languages?
Parenting Perspective
Language is a Bridge, Not a Barrier
Playing with children who speak other languages is a wonderful way for your child to grow in confidence, kindness, and communication skills. It shows them that language can be a bridge, not a barrier. When children play together, they often find creative ways to understand each other, using gestures, facial expressions, and simple words. This also builds their problem-solving skills and patience.
If your child feels shy at first, you can help by teaching them a few simple phrases to use, like ‘Can I play with you?’ or ‘What game are we playing?’ Stay close by if needed to reassure them. Praise your child for trying to interact with children who speak differently, even if they only manage a few words. Over time, these small moments help your child to learn that friendships can blossom across languages and that every effort to understand someone new is valuable. Keep playdates relaxed and fun; the goal is not perfect language but growing confidence and respect for others.
Spiritual Insight
Valuing Diversity
Islam teaches us to value diversity and see it as a sign of Allah Almighty’s mercy. Our different languages and cultures are meant to bring us closer, not to push us apart. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 13:
‘O mankind, indeed, We (Allah Almighty) have created you all from one man and one woman; and placed you amongst various nations and tribes for your introduction to each other…’
This verse reminds us that meeting and learning from others is part of our purpose.
Building Bridges
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged bonds of trust and friendship among people of all backgrounds. It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Make things easy and do not make things difficult.’
By encouraging your child to play kindly with those who speak other languages, you are following this Sunnah of easing hearts and building connections. Make Dua that Allah Almighty blesses your child’s words and actions with sincerity and openness. Remind them that every new word they learn or kind gesture they offer for the sake of friendship is an act that pleases Allah Almighty.
