Are Islamic Nasheeds and songs good for building vocabulary?
Parenting Perspective
A Joyful and Memorable Tool
Islamic Nasheeds and simple songs can be a wonderful tool for helping your child to grow their vocabulary in a joyful, memorable way. Songs use rhyme, rhythm, and repetition, three things that naturally help children to remember new words. When your child sings along, they are practising pronunciation and sentence patterns without feeling pressured.
Choose age-appropriate Nasheeds with clear words and positive messages. For young children, start with short songs that include everyday words and Islamic phrases, like saying ‘Alhamdulillah’ or ‘Bismillah’. Join in with your child so they feel confident to sing, even if they do not get every word right at first. Playing Nasheeds during car journeys, playtime, or at bedtime makes them feel like a gentle part of your child’s routine rather than a lesson. If your child enjoys it, encourage them to clap along, act out parts with hand movements, or share what they understood from the words. Over time, this playful exposure to language builds their confidence, good pronunciation, and a love for words rooted in positive, faith-filled messages.
Spiritual Insight
Words Like a Sturdy Tree
Islamic Nasheeds are more than just songs; they are reminders of faith and a way to keep the heart soft and focused on good words. Allah Almighty praises words that are pure and uplifting. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ibraheem (14), Verse 24:
‘Have you not observed how Allah (Almighty) presents the example of the ‘words of purity’; they are like the untainted tree, that is rooted firmly, and its branches (tower towards) the sky.’
When your child repeats beautiful phrases from Nasheeds, those words can settle like seeds in their heart, growing a love for Allah Almighty and for positive speech.
Keeping the Tongue Moist with Remembrance
The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ encouraged repeating good words and praises that keep the tongue busy with remembrance. It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 3375, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Keep your tongue moist with the remembrance of Allah.’
Simple Nasheeds do just that for young hearts; they keep the tongue busy with words of thankfulness, hope, and praise, while also building language skills. As a parent, choose Nasheeds that are clear and meaningful. Avoid songs that feel rushed or too complex for your child’s age. Sit with them, listen together, and talk about the words afterwards. This makes Nasheeds not just background sound but an active way to build your child’s vocabulary while deepening their sense of peace, belonging, and gratitude to Allah Almighty.
