How can families make household devices a source of barakah instead of a source of distraction?
Parenting Perspective
Shift the Intention Behind Device Use
Devices themselves are neutral tools; their effect depends entirely on how we use them. Parents can explain this by saying, ‘When we use our devices to learn, connect with family, or remember Allah, they become a source of blessing. When we waste time on them, they become a distraction.’ By linking usage to a clear purpose, a family can learn to see technology as a tool for growth, not a trap.
Create Shared Practices of Benefit
A family can set simple routines where devices play an uplifting role, such as listening to the Quran in the morning or joining an online Islamic class together. Even a shared digital calendar can be framed as a way of organising family life with excellence (ihsan). When children consistently see technology being used with discipline and for clear benefit, they will naturally start to associate it with barakah.
Keep Distractions in Check
To ensure devices do not become a source of heedlessness, it is important to set clear limits. This includes dedicating tech-free times for family connection and avoiding the constant use of background noise. By demonstrating a healthy balance—enjoying permissible content in moderation while always prioritising faith—parents model how to keep technology a blessing, not a burden.
Spiritual Insight
Gratitude Increases Blessings
The Quran teaches that when we are grateful for the blessings Allah has given us, He increases them. When technology is viewed as a gift and used with responsibility and thankfulness, its potential for benefit and barakah is multiplied.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ibraheem (14), Verse 7:
‘And (remember) when your Sustainer made this declaration; (saying that): “If you show gratitude, I (Allah Almighty) will indeed, amplify them for you (provisions and sustenance); however, if you become ungrateful, then indeed, My punishment is Meticulous (in execution)”.‘
Seeking Knowledge is a Path to Paradise
Using our devices to seek beneficial knowledge is a praiseworthy act. The prophetic tradition elevates the pursuit of knowledge to a high form of worship, a path that Allah makes easy for the sincere seeker.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 2699, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make easy for him the path to Paradise.’
Technology Guided by Faith
By anchoring their device use in clear intentions, creating shared practices of benefit, and keeping distractions in check, a family can transform technology from a source of heedlessness into a source of blessing. This teaches children that any tool can bring barakah when its use is guided by faith, gratitude, and discipline.
