What is the best way to replace background TV with nasheeds or Quran recitation in daily routines?

Parenting Perspective

Introduce the Change Gradually

For children who are accustomed to constant background television, a sudden switch to silence can feel like a punishment. A much smoother approach is to introduce Quran recitation or nasheeds gradually at specific times of the day, such as during breakfast or before bedtime. This allows uplifting sounds to slowly and naturally replace the noise of the TV without the change feeling forced.

Make It a Joyful and Meaningful Experience

These new sounds should be associated with joy, not rules. Parents can play uplifting nasheeds while tidying up or a soothing Quran recitation while driving. By connecting these sounds with warmth, routine, and positive family activities, children will naturally start to prefer them over the meaningless noise of background television.

Explain the Blessings of a Spiritually Sound Home

A parent can also explain the spiritual benefits: ‘When the Quran is recited in our home, it invites angels and fills the house with barakah. While the TV can be distracting, the Quran brings us peace.’ This helps children to understand that the choice is not about enforcing a rule, but about actively inviting blessings and calm into their daily lives.

Spiritual Insight

The Quran as a Source of Healing and Mercy

The Quran is described as a source of healing and mercy for believers. Filling the home with its recitation brings a spiritual nourishment that no form of worldly entertainment or background noise can ever provide.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Israa (17), Verse 82:

And We (Allah Almighty) have revealed within the Quran; that which is a source of cure and mercy for the believers; and those that are imbued in the darkness (of their ignorance and immorality), there is nothing but an extension of their own depravation.

Protecting the Home with Quran Recitation

The prophetic tradition teaches that reciting the Quran, particularly certain chapters, serves as a spiritual protection for the home, driving away negative influences and filling the space with light.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, 780, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Do not turn your houses into graves. Indeed, Shaytan flees from the house in which Surah Al Baqarah is recited.’

Shaping the Home’s Atmosphere

By gradually replacing background TV noise with Quran and nasheeds, and by making the practice joyful and consistent, a family can transform the entire atmosphere of their home. Children learn that the sounds we choose to live with shape our hearts, and that nothing compares to the peace, barakah, and protection that come from the words of Allah Almighty.
