How do we help children understand that modesty also applies to their usernames, profile pictures, and bio descriptions?
Parenting Perspective
A child’s online profile is their digital front door. Guiding them to create one that reflects modesty and self-respect is a key part of teaching them to navigate the online world with a strong sense of their Islamic identity.
Connect Online Identity to Real Character
Explain that their username and bio are not just random text; they are a representation of who they are. Help them to see that choosing respectful and non-provocative options is a way of showing self-respect and leaving a good first impression.
Discuss the Subtle Messages in Choices
Gently guide them to think about the subtle messages their choices might send. Help them to understand that modesty is not about hiding who they are, but about choosing to be known for their good character, not for a flashy or attention-seeking profile.
Offer Positive Alternatives
Rather than only forbidding certain choices, work together to brainstorm usernames and bios that are both creative and respectful. This keeps the process empowering and collaborative, not restrictive.
Model It Yourself
Your own profile is a powerful example. When your children see that your online presence is free from boastful or inappropriate elements, they are much more likely to mirror that same standard of dignity.
These conversations help them build an online identity that aligns with their real-world values.
Spiritual Insight
In Islam, modesty (haya) is a comprehensive principle that covers all aspects of how we present ourselves to the world, both seen and unseen.
Modesty in Self-Presentation
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah An Noor (24), Verse 30:
‘Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts; that is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is aware of what they do…’
This reminds us that guarding our modesty is a means of purification, and this principle applies directly to how we present ourselves to the world through our digital profiles.
The Character of Faith
It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 4181, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
‘Indeed, every religion has a distinct characteristic, and the distinct characteristic of Islam is modesty (Haya’).’
This teaches us that haya is a core part of our identity as Muslims. By guiding our children to reflect this in their online profiles, we help them to live their faith with confidence and dignity in all spaces.
