What do I say when my child dismisses outdoor play because it does not give “points” or “rewards”?

Parenting Perspective

When a child’s motivation is shaped by the instant rewards of video games, the simple joys of outdoor play can seem less appealing. The key is to help them recognise the different, and often deeper, rewards that come from real-world activities.

Connect Outdoor Play to Their Interests

If your child is motivated by in-game achievements, you can relate outdoor play to similar concepts. Try turning it into a playful challenge, such as creating a nature scavenger hunt with a checklist to complete, or keeping a record of how many basketball shots they can make in a row. This adds a familiar sense of achievement to the activity.

Highlight Real-Life Rewards

Gently help your child to recognise the real, lasting rewards of being active. You could say, ‘In a game, the points stay on the screen, but when you run around outside, your body gets stronger, and that reward stays with you.’ Reinforcing these benefits helps them to shift their understanding of what truly counts as a win.

Play Together and Model Enthusiasm

Children are much more likely to value an activity when they see their parents enjoying it too. When you join in with genuine enthusiasm, whether it is a game of catch or a simple race to a tree, the shared laughter and connection become the most powerful reward of all.

By reframing outdoor play as an activity with its own exciting challenges and lasting benefits, you make it feel worthwhile in a way that resonates with a child who is used to game-based motivation.

Spiritual Insight

Islam teaches us that our physical health and the time we spend in wholesome activities are profound blessings from God. Not all rewards in life are tangible or immediate; many of the best are connected to our health, happiness, and gratitude for the abilities Allah has given us.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Luqman (31), Verse 20:

Have you not observed, that indeed, Allah (Almighty) has facilitated for you that which is in the layers of trans-universal existence and in the Earth; and bestowed upon you His optimum benefaction, both which is visible, and that which you are incapable of observing…’

This reminds us that the natural world and our physical ability to enjoy it are immense gifts from Allah, which we are meant to appreciate and care for.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2664, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘A strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah than a weak believer, while there is good in both.’

This teaches us that maintaining our physical health and strength through wholesome activities is a characteristic that is beloved to Allah.

By helping your child to view outdoor play as a blessing that builds strength and brings joy, you replace the superficial idea of digital ‘points’ with the lasting satisfaction that comes from taking care of their health and appreciating the gifts of Allah.
