When should I start introducing solid foods?

Babies should be introduced to solid foods when they demonstrate obvious signs of readiness, normally at six months. Most infants are then able to sit unsupported, possess good head control, and be interested in food, e.g., observing people eat or grabbing hold of food. Beginning too early can raise the risk of choking and digestive problems, while beginning too late can interfere with chewing skill development and nutritional equilibrium. Parents must start with easy, soft foods like pureed fruits, cooked vegetables, or baby rice. Continuing breastfeeding or formula feeding in addition to solids is also essential up to at least one year of age. Slowly adding various textures and tastes builds good eating habits and enhances the child’s physical and intellectual development. Healthcare professionals should be consulted by parents if there are concerns regarding allergy, growth, or readiness for development.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 233: ‘And the (divorced) mothers may breastfeed their children for two complete years, for whoever wishes to complete the (period of) breastfeeding (for the baby)… the mother shall not be made to suffer because of the child and neither the father shall be (made to suffer) because of his child. and upon the heir (of the father) is a similar duty like that (of the father); and if they both desire to wean off (the child from breastfeeding) through mutual consent and consultation with both of them, then there is no culpability upon either of them…’ These references confirm that the period of breastfeeding should ideally continue for two years, and solid foods may be introduced around six months as a complementary nutrition, not a replacement. This ensures the child receives balanced nourishment while transitioning gradually.
