What toys are best for cognitive development?
Parenting Perspective
Toys that support imagination, problem-solving and coordination are the most beneficial for cognitive growth. Building blocks, puzzles, magnetic tiles and simple construction sets encourage planning, spatial awareness and resilience through trial and improvement. When children experiment with shapes or structures and something topples over, they learn to try again, adapting with each attempt. These toys help build concentration and flexible thinking.
Pretend play items such as dolls, toy kitchens and dress-up clothes nurture storytelling, empathy and language. Through role-play, children practise sequencing, social skills and emotional understanding. Art supplies, crayons and musical instruments encourage expression and fine motor control while fostering creativity. These kinds of activities are especially helpful in developing both the brain and emotional intelligence.
Spiritual Insight
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahl, Verse 78: ‘And Allah Almighty extracted you from the wombs of your mothers, in a state in which you knew nothing; and He designated for you the power of hearing and sight and intellect, so that you may become grateful.’ This verse reminds us that every ability a child possesses is a divine trust. These faculties of hearing, sight and understanding are given by Allah Almighty to be nurtured with care. Selecting toys that encourage children to use these gifts wisely is part of fulfilling that trust. Encouraging thought, play and gratitude together shapes both mind and character.
It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2687, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Wisdom is the lost property of the believer, so wherever he finds it, he is more deserving of it.’ This Hadith teaches that truth and learning can be found in various forms, even in play. When children engage with toys that foster wisdom and reflection, they begin to understand the value of knowledge. These early experiences form pathways not only to intelligence but to gratitude and humility. Guided play becomes an act of honouring Allah Almighty’s blessings and preparing the child to seek meaningful understanding in life.
