What stories can show prophets as loving family members too?

Parenting Perspective

When children hear stories about the Prophets, their attention is often captured by the miracles or the grand struggles. However, what truly makes these narratives relatable and emotionally resonant is learning how the Prophets also lived as gentle fathers, loving sons, and compassionate brothers. By choosing to share stories that highlight their kindness within a family setting, you can show your children that true greatness is found not only in public leadership but also in private compassion at home. These examples help children to connect their Islamic role models to the love and care they experience in their own daily lives.

The Protective Love of Prophet Yaqub

Share the story of how Prophet Yaqub expressed his deep and protective love for his young son, Yusuf. When Yusuf shared his incredible dream, his father’s first instinct was to warn him gently, advising him not to share it with his brothers out of fear for his safety. This particular story beautifully illustrates that true parental guidance is based on affection and a desire to protect, not merely on authority.

The Mutual Respect of Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail

Recount the incredible story of Prophet Ibrahim’s dream of sacrifice. It is important to highlight that he did not simply command his son; instead, he consulted Ismail, asking for his opinion and consent. This demonstrates a profound mutual respect between father and son, and it teaches children that deep faith and family love can and should exist together in a beautiful balance.

The Tenderness of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ

Describe the many well-known instances of the Prophet Muhammad’s ﷺ tenderness with his own family, especially his grandchildren, Hasan and Husayn. Stories of him kissing them, hugging them, and allowing them to climb on his back even during his prayer show children that love and mercy are central to the home of a believer.

The Divinely Protected Bond of Prophet Musa and His Mother

Remind your children of the story of how Allah returned the baby Musa to his mother’s arms after she had placed him in the river. This narrative powerfully emphasises that the precious bonds of family are themselves a form of divine mercy, a gift that Allah actively protects and nurtures.

By retelling these moments in simple, heartfelt language, you allow your children to see the Prophets not just as historical figures, but as beautiful models of both unwavering faith and profound tenderness within their families.

Spiritual Insight

The Quran on Trust Between Father and Son

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Yusuf (12), Verses 4:

Remember (O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ), when (Prophet) Yusuf (AS) said to his father: “O my father, indeed, I have seen eleven stars, and the Sun and the Moon; I saw them (all) prostrating towards me”.

This opening to the story of Prophet Yusuf immediately establishes the closeness and trust in his relationship with his father. He felt safe enough to share something as personal and significant as his dream. Sharing this example with children helps them to understand that faith grows strongest in an atmosphere of trust, affection, and open communication.

Prophetic Guidance on Mercy Within the Family

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1919, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘He is not of us who does not show mercy to our young and respect to our elders.’

This hadith makes it clear that showing mercy, especially within the family, is an essential characteristic of a believer. By sharing stories of the Prophets’ family lives, you teach your children a profound lesson: that the love, respect, and kindness shown between family members are themselves acts of worship, powerful reflections of Allah’s mercy lived out in our everyday relationships.
