What simple Duas can we say before lessons start each day?

Parenting Perspective

Keeping it Short and Meaningful

One of the simplest yet strongest seeds you can plant in your child’s heart is to begin every study session with a small, sincere Dua that reminds them knowledge is a blessing from Allah Almighty. Keep it short and meaningful so your child can learn it easily and truly understand what they are asking for.

Specific Duas to Try

Try starting each lesson by raising your hands together and saying, O Allah, grant us knowledge that is beneficial and protect us from knowledge that does not benefit. Another simple line could be, O Allah, open my chest and make my task easy for me. Encourage your child to say it in their own words if they wish, as this helps them connect with the meaning rather than repeating words without understanding.

Making it a Gentle Daily Habit

Young children especially love repetition, so turn this into a gentle daily habit before they open a book, do homework, or begin an online lesson. This simple routine teaches your child that learning is not just about finishing tasks but about seeking Barakah and growing closer to Allah Almighty.

Over time, these small moments help your child approach their lessons with a calm heart and clear intention, InshaAllah. They will grow to see that every bit of knowledge they gain is part of their faith journey and not separate from it.

Spiritual Insight

Islam honours the search for knowledge as a sacred path when we ask Allah Almighty for guidance and protection from arrogance or misuse.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ta-Ha (20), Verse 25–26:

[Musa (AS)] said, My Lord, expand for me my chest and ease for me my task.

This powerful Dua of Prophet Musa (AS) is a beautiful reminder for every learner, that calmness, focus, and clarity are gifts from Allah Almighty.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah Almighty will make the path to Paradise easy for him.

Teaching your child even short Duas makes them realise that each lesson is a step on that blessed path. You can write these Duas on a small card and keep it on the desk or learning corner, so they become part of your daily rhythm. Encourage your child to say Bismillah before starting and Alhamdulillah when finishing, these simple words hold so much power and remind them that every bit of knowledge comes from Allah Almighty alone. Over time, your child will feel that their studies, no matter how big or small, are a form of Ibadah. When they struggle, teach them to pause and make Dua again for help and understanding. This habit not only brings calm and focus but nurtures Sabr, Tawakkul, and hope, values that will stay with them far beyond their books, InshaAllah
