What should I expect during an assessment for autism or ADHD?

Parenting Perspective

The Initial Conversations

When your child is being assessed for autism or ADHD, it is natural to feel anxious or unsure about what the process involves. The assessment typically starts with a series of conversations between you and the professionals involved, this could include a paediatrician, clinical psychologist, or a specialist in neurodevelopmental conditions. They will ask about your child’s developmental history, daily routines, challenges they face, and how they interact with others. These early conversations are crucial because they help build a full picture of your child’s behaviours across different settings, such as home and school.

Questionnaires and Observations

Expect to fill out questionnaires or screening forms that explore attention, social interaction, emotional regulation, and sensory behaviours. Your child may also participate in observations, play-based tasks, or structured interviews depending on their age. The professionals will be looking not just for ‘symptoms’, but for patterns of behaviour that affect your child’s learning, friendships, and overall wellbeing.

The Goal is Understanding, Not Labeling

It is important to know that the goal of the assessment is not to label your child, but to understand them better. If your child does meet the criteria for autism or ADHD, the diagnosis can open doors to tailored support at school, access to therapies, and a more compassionate understanding of their unique needs. Throughout the process, be open, ask questions, and remember you are your child’s strongest advocate, and this step is part of helping them thrive.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, every child is a unique trust from Allah Almighty, and their differences, whether visible or hidden, are part of His divine wisdom. Seeking an assessment for autism or ADHD is not an admission of weakness, but an act of care, concern, and love.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Ash-Shura (42), Verse 49:

To Allah belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. He creates what He wills. He gives to whom He wills female [children], and He gives to whom He wills males. ‘

This verse reminds us that each child, in their individuality, is willed by Allah.

The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was deeply compassionate towards those with different abilities and needs. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2577, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Be merciful to those on the earth and the One above the heavens will have mercy upon you.

Seeking clarity through an assessment is a form of mercy, for your child and your family. It reflects the trust you have placed in Allah’s plan, while also taking practical steps to support your child’s development with Ihsan (excellence).

Approaching the assessment with Sabr and Tawakkul can help ease fears. Whether the outcome confirms a diagnosis or not, remember that your child’s value in Allah’s eyes is not determined by labels, but by the purity of their soul and the sincerity of your love and care.
