What should I do when my child gets angry over schoolwork or refuses to do it?

Parenting Perspective

Schoolwork can often lead to feelings of frustration, especially when a child feels overwhelmed, lacks confidence, or feels disconnected from the task at hand. Anger can manifest in various ways, such as yelling, refusing to engage, or pulling away emotionally. These responses may suggest that the child is experiencing feelings of lack of support or anxiety, rather than simply being disobedient.

Break the task into smaller, more achievable parts

  • Say: Let us take a moment to examine one question together. Next, we will have a brief break.
  • Create a structure that includes regular breaks, timers, and calming tools such as soft background sounds

Balance emotion with routine

  • Recognise their emotions without endorsing poor behaviour: I understand this is difficult, but it is acceptable to seek assistance rather than raise your voice.
  • Develop a consistent homework schedule to reduce last-minute pressure
  • Acknowledge challenges and reassure them that mistakes are part of learning

Your consistent, composed presence models resilience. Children will slowly learn to face learning struggles without avoidance and with increasing self-confidence.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in Surah Al Inshirah (94), Verses 5–6:

Thus with (every) hardship there is facilitation (from Allah Almighty). Indeed, with (every) hardship there is facilitation (from Allah Almighty). ‘

This repeated affirmation provides reassurance during challenges, teaching children that ease follows difficulty and that struggles are a path to growth.

It is reported in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3689, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Allah is Gentle and loves gentleness in all things.

This Hadith reminds us that education, like all guidance, should be delivered with kindness, not pressure. Calmness and encouragement during learning struggles reflect the prophetic way.

A short Dua for your child might be:

O Allah Almighty, open my heart and make learning easy for me. ‘

By integrating gentleness with practical support, you guide your child toward inner confidence and spiritual grounding through even the most trying academic moments.
