What should I do if my child wants a career, I am unsure about?
Parenting Perspective
Respond with Openness, Not Fear
When your child expresses interest in a career that feels unfamiliar or uncertain to you, pause and respond with openness, not fear. Ask, ‘What is it about this path that inspires you?’ or ‘What do you hope to bring to the world through this work?’ Listening without judgement creates a safe space for dialogue and deepens mutual respect. Explore the field together, look at its daily realities, ethical dimensions, and whether it aligns with your family values and Islamic principles.
Seek Advice and Guide with Love
If you still feel unsure, seek advice from a trusted Islamic scholar, career counsellor, or mentor who understands both the faith and the professional world. Invite your child to reflect on their intention by asking, ‘How could this work help others or bring you closer to Allah Almighty?’ Even if you disagree, guide the conversation with love and curiosity. By doing so, you are not only offering perspective, but you are also showing that your guidance is rooted in care, not control.
Spiritual Insight
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hujuraat (49), Verse 13:
“…Indeed, the best of you in the judgement of Allah (Almighty) is the one who is most virtuous… “
This verse reminds us that what matters most is not a person’s career title or status, but the righteousness of their actions and intentions. It invites us to evaluate choices through the lens of Taqwa, not societal expectation.
It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 893, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ respected each person’s strengths and potential. He 1ﷺ did not impose one path for all, but rather encouraged individuals to grow in their unique capacities while maintaining sincerity and service.2 This Prophetic wisdom can guide you when your child’s aspirations feel unfamiliar. Focus on helping them approach their career with a strong heart, ethical purpose, and a desire to benefit others.
Let them know that you are walking beside them, not holding them back. Say, ‘If this path brings good to people and brings you closer to Allah Almighty, then let us keep exploring it together.’ In this way, your support becomes a bridge between their dreams and their Deen, anchored in love, trust, and Tawakkul.
