What should I do if my child gets angry and storms off when losing?

Parenting Perspective

Leaving suddenly after a loss is a common reaction especially in children who may be perfectionists, impulsive, or still learning emotional regulation. To them, a loss can feel like a blow to identity rather than merely a game. Safety and space are priorities. Avoid trying to discuss the issue while your child is still upset.

Once calm, open conversation with gentle empathy: It was truly disappointing to lose, was it not? Then, explore safe ways for your child to express their frustration like drawing, moving, or using breathing techniques. Collaboratively set a framework for future games: If an individual needs a break, they can take five minutes before coming back. This empowers them to manage emotions and take ownership of their responses.

Over time, children learn that recovering from disappointment is part of life. This gradual process builds emotional maturity and self-discipline.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the Quran, Surah Aalai Imran (3), Verse 139:

And do not weaken (seeing the strength of the opposition), and do not grieve (for those of passed away as martyrs); and ultimately you will prevail, if you are (true) believers.

This verse uplifts the heart after perceived loss, reminding us that dignity stems from spiritual resilience, not worldly success.

It is narrated in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2021, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Whoever suppresses his rage while he is able to unleash it, Allah will call him before the heads (leaders) of creation on the Day of Judgement, so that he can inform Him of which of the Hur he would like.

This teaching affirms that restraint is not a weakness but a meritorious act. Encourage your child to recite:

A‘udhu billahi minash‑shaytaanir‑rajeem

after moments of disappointment. Over time, this becomes a grounding spiritual habit, anchoring emotional recovery in faith and purpose.
