What records should I keep showing future schools or colleges?
Parenting Perspective
The Importance of Record-Keeping
Keeping clear, honest records when home-educating is an important part of your child’s learning journey, especially if they ever wish to join a school or college in the future. Well-kept records help new teachers understand how to support your child best and show that they have been given a full and balanced education.
What to Keep: Work Samples and a Progress Diary
Begin with a simple system that does not feel overwhelming. Save examples of work in each subject, this can include essays, worksheets, art pieces, science experiments or any projects that show skills and progress. Keep a basic progress diary noting what you have covered, what skills have been learned and any challenges overcome.
Recording Attendance, Activities, and Exams
Record attendance, hours spent studying and enrichment activities such as volunteering, field trips or competitions. If your child sits exams as a private candidate, keep their entries, timetables and certificates safe. You can also add any tutor reports or notes from work placements in a clear and simple portfolio.
Being organised now saves stress later, giving you evidence if you ever need to make a new school or college application. Teach your child that keeping good records is a valuable life habit, helping them feel proud of their growth and more prepared for adult life where clear records are part of being responsible.
Spiritual Insight
Islam teaches us that keeping honest, clear records is part of fulfilling an Amanah, a trust that must be protected with integrity. This includes tracking our children’s education, which is part of our duty as parents.
Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 282:
‘And do not be [too] weary to write it, whether it is small or large, for its [specified] term. That is more just in the sight of Allah and stronger as evidence… ‘
This Ayah, though about financial transactions, reminds us of the virtue of keeping clear, reliable records to protect everyone’s rights.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1829a, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:
‘Every one of you is a shepherd and every one of you is responsible for his flock. ‘
Recording your child’s progress is part of this trust, it protects their future opportunities and shows that you have met your duty sincerely. Make Dua for wisdom and Barakah in your child’s learning: O Allah, guide my child to success and grant me the ability to fulfil this trust well. Remind your child that in Islam, truthfulness and clarity are always rewarded, whether in study, work, or daily life. By keeping careful records, you model honesty, diligence, and respect for rights, habits that will serve your child in every aspect of life, InshaAllah.
