What is the healthiest way to explain to children why parents sometimes need tech more for work?

Parenting Perspective

Explain the Difference Simply

When children see their parents on devices, they can often feel it is unfair that their own screen time is limited. The healthiest way to address this is with a clear and simple explanation: ‘You use screens mostly for fun and learning, whereas I often need to use them for my job to provide for our family.’ By distinguishing between purpose and pleasure, parents can teach that technology is a tool with different roles depending on one’s responsibilities.

Link Your Work to Family Benefits

It is also helpful to explain that work-related tech use is about fulfilling a duty, not about ignoring the family. Saying, ‘When I use my laptop for work, it helps pay for our home, food, and your school,’ connects the parent’s screen time to a direct family benefit. This reframes the time spent online as an act of care and responsibility, rather than an unfair privilege.

Balance Work Use With Full Presence

To prevent feelings of resentment, it is crucial that parents also demonstrate that their work-related technology has clear boundaries. Putting devices away after work hours or pausing tasks to give a child undivided attention sends a powerful message. This balance proves to children that even though a parent’s work may require more screen time, family connection always remains the top priority.

Spiritual Insight

Seeking Livelihood is an Act of Worship

In Islam, working to provide for one’s family is considered a noble pursuit and a form of worship, especially when it is balanced with faith and remembrance of Allah Almighty.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Jumu’ah (62), Verse 10:

Then when the prayer has concluded, then dispersed on the Earth and seek the benefaction of Allah (Almighty); and remember Allah (Almighty) excessively so that you may be victorious.’

The Honour in Hard Work

The prophetic tradition teaches that earning a livelihood through hard work, using the tools available to us, is a source of dignity and is far better than being dependent on others.

It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, 1836, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘It is better for one of you to take a rope and bring a bundle of firewood on his back and sell it than to beg from someone.’

Technology as a Tool for Responsibility

By explaining that technology is used for responsibility and provision rather than indulgence, parents can foster greater understanding within the family. When this explanation is paired with visible balance and genuine presence, children learn to see work-related tech use not as a double standard, but as an integral part of care, responsibility, and even worship.
