What is the best way to reduce background TV noise so children learn to enjoy silence?

Parenting Perspective

Explain the Value of Quiet

In many homes, the television is left on for ‘background noise,’ but this habit normalises constant stimulation and can make genuine silence feel uncomfortable. Parents can begin by gently explaining the value of quiet time: ‘Silence helps our minds and hearts to rest, just as sleep helps our bodies to rest.’ By framing quiet as a positive and restful experience, children can learn to see it as a comfort, not a burden.

Reduce Noise Gradually, Not Suddenly

Suddenly switching off all background noise can feel jarring for a child who is used to it. A more effective approach is a gradual reduction. Parents can start with short, quiet intervals, such as turning the television off during mealtimes. Over time, these pockets of stillness can be extended until silence feels more natural. Replacing the noise with soft Quran recitation can also help to make the transition smoother.

Model Comfort with Stillness

Children will observe whether their parents are truly at ease with quiet. If a parent seems anxious and immediately reaches for a remote control or a phone to fill the silence, children will learn that quiet is something to be avoided. By modelling contentment in stillness whether by reading a book or simply enjoying a cup of tea in peace parents show that silence is a state of calm and presence, not emptiness.

Spiritual Insight

Calm and Silence as Divine Blessings

The Quran teaches that Allah Almighty designed the natural world with periods of calm and quiet to serve as a means of rest and reflection for humanity. Embracing silence aligns us with this intended blessing.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Yunus (10), Verse 67:

(Allah Almighty) is the One Who has designated the night for you, so that you may have (the vital restoration through) respite therein, and the day giving transparency (to the process of growth everywhere); indeed, in this there are (irrefutable) Signs (of the infinite truth) for those nations that are willing to listen (to the voice of reason).

Calmness from Allah, Haste from Shaytan

The prophetic tradition contrasts inner states, teaching that a sense of calm is a blessing from Allah, while haste and agitation are from Shaytan. Constant background noise can contribute to a feeling of rush that disturbs our peace and reflection.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, 2012, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

‘Calmness and patient deliberation is from Allah, while haste is from Shaytan.’

Embracing Quiet as a Blessing

By gradually reducing background noise, modelling comfort in silence, and linking stillness to the concepts of peace and barakah, parents can help their children embrace quiet as a blessing. Over time, silence can become a natural and cherished part of family life, creating a space for rest, reflection, and closeness to Allah Almighty.
