What is one thing I can start doing to be more emotionally available?

Parenting Perspective

Initiate by dedicating five uninterrupted minutes each day to your child. Just being there without using a phone or multitasking. Sit with them, watch them, and inquire about their feelings rather than just what they did. Your youngster will know they are important when they see your face soften and your eyes fully focused on them. Consistent displays of warmth, security, and attention are more important indicators of emotional availability than having in-depth conversations all the time.

Spiritual Insight

Being present is a form of worship. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Taaha (20), Verse 14: ‘Indeed, without any doubt, it is I, Allah (Almighty); there is no one worthy of worship except Me, so worship Me, and establish your prayer in My remembrance.’ The presence in Salah is mirrored by the presence in relationships. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2319, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘He who does not show mercy to our children is not one of us.’ Even in brief moments, responding with compassion and consideration is a sign of being emotionally available.
