What is a healthy breakfast for a child?

Parenting Perspective

A good breakfast should offer balanced nutrients and energy to sustain a child’s growth and focus over the morning. It should contain carbohydrates for energy, protein for growth and repair, and brain-building healthy fats. They could be wholegrain cereals with milk or yoghurt, eggs with veg, porridge with fruit and nuts, or wholegrain toast with avocado. Steer clear of sweet breakfast cereals or doughnuts that provide rapid bursts of energy and soon lead to lethargy. The addition of Halal and natural foods makes the meal wholesome and healthy. A balanced breakfast aids in long-term concentration, mood, and general well-being. Making children eat breakfast daily also creates healthy habits for their lifetime.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 168: ‘O mankind! Consume from the Earth that which is lawful and pure (qualitative)…’ It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5351, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘When a Muslim spends something on his family intending to receive Allah’s reward it is regarded as Sadaqa for him.’ These teachings promote providing children with lawful, wholesome food to nourish body and soul, reinforcing the importance of a proper breakfast.
