What is a balanced diet for a teenager?

Parenting Perspective

An adolescent’s balanced diet consists of a mix of foods from all five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein sources, and dairy. Teenagers require higher energy and nutrient intakes because of growth and development. Adequate calories, protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals are crucial. Regular meals and snacks should be encouraged, and the consumption of added sugars and unhealthy fats should be reduced from processed foods, and hydration should be maintained through water and healthy drinks.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 172: ‘O you who are believers, consume from amongst that which is purified, which We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you…’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith, 2380 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls.’ It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2340, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.’ Providing a balanced diet for teenagers aligns with the Islamic emphasis on maintaining good health and consuming Halal, wholesome foods. By offering a variety of nutritious options and encouraging healthy eating habits, parents can support their teenager’s physical and spiritual well-being.
