What if my child gets angry when they do not understand the task?

Parenting Perspective

When a child reacts with anger to something they do not understand, it usually signals frustration rather than wilful disobedience. At different points in their development, children may find it difficult to express confusion or embarrassment. This often presents as irritability or avoidance of certain tasks.

Understand developmental needs

  • Younger children may benefit from tasks being broken into smaller, more manageable steps
  • Older children, especially those eager to succeed, may feel overwhelmed by pressure or self-doubt

Begin by recognising their difficulty and praising their effort, even if the outcome is incomplete. Offer space to pause, and gently guide them back to the task with reassurance.

Over time, children learn to approach challenges not as a measure of self-worth, but as opportunities for growth and trust in their process.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran in Surah Taaha (20), Verse 114:

….O my Sustainer, increase for me (the parameters of) knowledge. ‘

This Verse reminds us to revere the journey of learning, recognising that understanding unfolds gradually. Supporting a child through confusion is not simply academic but it nurtures spiritual resilience and trust in Allah Almighty.

It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2594a, that the Holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:

Kindness is not to be found in anything but that it adds to its beauty, and it is not withdrawn from anything, but it makes it defective.

This Hadith encourages gentle teaching, especially when confidence is shaken. Soft speech and patience are acts of insight, not indulgence.

A simple practice is to teach your child to recite:

Rabbi yassir wa la tu’assir (O my Lord, make it easy and do not make it difficult) ‘

This connects the child’s internal experience to divine companionship, reinforcing that learning, like life, is a process guided by mercy.
