What if I do not feel confident teaching certain subjects?

Parenting Perspective

You Are a Guide, Not a Perfect Expert

It is only natural to feel unsure about teaching some subjects, especially as your child gets older or the topics grow more advanced. Home education does not mean you must do everything alone or be an expert in every area. Start by reminding yourself that you are a guide and companion on your child’s learning journey, not a perfect source of knowledge. It is powerful for your child to see you learn alongside them. When they see you admit gaps, look things up, and practise new ideas, they learn how to stay curious and resilient too.

Using External Resources and Co-ops

Use trustworthy textbooks, free online tutorials, and educational videos to fill in areas you do not know well. For subjects like maths or science that feel more difficult, look for local co-ops or study groups where parents share skills, one may be confident in numbers, another in languages. If your budget allows, consider hiring a tutor for short-term support. Community groups and charities sometimes offer free or low-cost sessions too.

Keeping the Atmosphere Calm and Open

Keep your home atmosphere calm and open, your child should feel safe to ask questions and make mistakes. Let them see that mistakes are part of learning for everyone, not a cause for shame. Be patient with yourself and your child. You do not need to be perfect to be a good teacher; what really matters is your honesty, humility and willingness to keep trying, step by step.

Spiritual Insight

Islam reminds us that seeking knowledge is a lifelong journey and that asking for help when needed is not weakness but wisdom.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Taha (20), Verse 114:

And say, My Lord, increase me in knowledge.

This beautiful Dua shows that even the most learned are commanded to ask for growth and clarity.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah will make the path to Paradise easy for him.

This applies to you as a parent too, every effort you make to understand a tricky topic or to find the right help is part of your Ibadah. Make Dua: O Allah, expand my understanding and guide me to teach my child well. Share with your child how the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ always encouraged companions to seek knowledge from each other. Let them see that no one knows everything but that we support one another with honesty and care. Remind yourself that your sincere intention to provide a rounded education, even when you feel out of your depth, carries immense reward. This openness to seek help, learn, and adapt sets an example that will stay with your child long after any single lesson is over, showing them that true strength lies in humility, Sabr, and Tawakkul, InshaAllah
