What if I am not a confident teacher myself?

Parenting Perspective

Confidence in teaching does not come from having all the facts, it grows from building moments of connection and trust. Many parents feel uncertain, especially if their own schooling was difficult or their talents lie elsewhere. But teaching is not about perfection; it is about presence. When you sit beside your child with interest, when you ask questions, share your thinking aloud, or even admit, ‘Let us learn this together’, you are creating an emotionally safe space for curiosity to flourish. This vulnerability teaches children that learning is a lifelong process, not a performance. Simple acts like reading together, discussing a thought-provoking question, or exploring a nature walk can all be powerful educational moments. Your child does not need a flawless tutor; they need a parent who listens, encourages, and stays engaged. Show them that courage is not the absence of fear, it is the willingness to try even when you feel unsure. That lesson may be the most lasting education of all.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Zumar (39), Verse 9: ‘…Say (O Prophet Muhammad ﷺ): ‘Can there ever be parity between those people that have knowledge and those people that do not have knowledge?’…’ This profound reminder affirms the sacred distinction of knowledge in Islam. But it also highlights that the pursuit of knowledge, no matter how humble or hesitant, is deeply honoured. You do not need to arrive with answers; you only need to begin with sincerity. It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1893a, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: ‘He who guides to something good has a reward like the one who does it.’ This Hadith Shareef lifts the weight from your shoulders, every effort you make to direct your child, even with limited knowledge, carries immense spiritual value. Your role is not to master everything, but to guide with intention. In doing so, you become part of a virtuous chain, where the light of knowledge is passed hand to hand, heart to heart, with hope, humility, and faith.
