What emotional impact does it have on a child when I truly listen without interrupting?

Parenting Perspective

A child feels protected, respected, and cherished when they are heard without interruption. It teaches kids that their thoughts count and boosts their sense of self-worth. Additionally, it fosters trust since people realize they can approach you without worrying about getting shut down. They may feel hurried or invisible if you interrupt them. Your child will learn to believe that ‘my parent wants to know me’ if you listen to them quietly, nod, and follow their thoughts.

Spiritual Insight

Listening is a prophetic quality. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Qaaf (50), Verse 37: ‘Indeed, in this there is a realisation for those who have a heart and those who pay attention while they are (attentively) observant.’ It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 4682, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ would never cut someone off mid-speech. The holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘The most perfect believer in respect of faith is he who is best of them in manners.’ Even children received his undivided attention, indicating that their words were valuable and not a bother.
