What early signs might show that my child has a learning difficulty?

Parenting Perspective

Understanding Normal Development vs. Learning Needs

Many parents wonder if their child’s struggles are simply part of normal development or signs that they may have a learning difficulty. It is important to remember that every child grows at their own pace, and it is normal for them to have strengths in some areas and find others more challenging. However, there are signs that could suggest an underlying learning need.

Specific Signs to Watch For

These might include clear delays in speaking, difficulty following simple instructions, or struggling to remember basic information. Some children find it hard to grasp letters, numbers or shapes when compared to their peers. Others may seem to avoid certain tasks altogether, get frustrated easily or feel anxious about making mistakes. You might also notice they have trouble holding a pencil properly, tying shoelaces or understanding simple sequences like the days of the week.

Observing, Keeping Notes, and Seeking Guidance

Keep in mind that even mild struggles can affect how your child learns and interacts with the world around them. Try to observe gently over time, keep notes about what you see and talk openly with your child’s teacher or health visitor. This will help you understand whether your child might benefit from extra support.

Spotting learning needs early can make a big difference to your child’s confidence and long-term progress, so trust what you see. Asking for help does not mean putting a label on your child. It shows that you are ready to give them the tools, patience and understanding they need to thrive. You know your child best and your support can help them shine.

Spiritual Insight

Islam encourages parents to approach every test with compassion, hope, and trust in Allah Almighty’s plan. If you notice signs that your child might have a learning difficulty, remember that knowledge and understanding are gifts from Allah Almighty, and each child’s unique abilities are part of His wisdom.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Nahl (16), Verse 78:

And Allah brought you out of your mothers’ wombs not knowing a thing, and He gave you hearing, sight, and hearts that you might give thanks. ‘

This Ayah reminds us that all skills, understanding, and awareness develop gradually and are blessings to be nurtured with gratitude and patience.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 1385, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Every child is born upon the Fitrah.

This Hadith Shareef teaches that every child carries an innate goodness and potential, even if they face learning challenges. Some children may struggle in ways that are hidden to others but known fully to Allah Almighty, who is Al-Baseer, the All-Seeing. As parents, you are rewarded for your sincere effort, Sabr, and Dua. Support your child by celebrating their small successes, praising their effort more than the outcome, and reminding them that Allah Almighty values intention and striving. Learning difficulties do not diminish your child’s worth, they simply call for more creative, patient guidance. With trust in Allah Almighty’s mercy, each struggle can become a means of growth, strengthening your child’s sense of self and your family’s bond of love.
