What can I do when I feel too emotionally drained to connect with my child?

Parenting Perspective

It is possible to experience emotional tiredness and feel overwhelmed when parenting under pressure. Do the same for yourself as you would for your child. It is acceptable to pause. Simple actions like holding hands, sitting quietly together, or even just expressing, ‘I want to be with you, but I am feeling tired right now,’ demonstrate self-control and honesty. If you experience burnout every day, consider your load and support network. On difficult days, small gestures like smiling, saying a Dua together, or speaking softly are sufficient. Even in modest dosages, emotional availability is more important for connection than energy levels.

Spiritual Insight

Everyone gets tired, even the most ardent believers. Returning to Allah Almighty in humility and honesty is crucial. Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Inshirah (94), Verses 5-6: ‘Thus with (every) hardship there is facilitation (from Allah Almighty). Indeed, with every hardship there is facilitation (from Allah Almighty).’ It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2664, that the holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘The strong believer is better and more beloved to Allah Almighty than the weak believer, though both are good…’ Being strong is knowing when to take a break and refuel. Make tired moments into opportunities to say a prayer for patience, mercy, and the strength to be there for your child with love.
