What are the best books or tools to help children understand big feelings?

Parenting Perspective

Introducing children to books and resources that explain emotions can effectively assist them in developing emotional intelligence. Young children frequently do not have the words or understanding to express their emotions, which may result in outbursts or confusion. Using visual resources that are suitable for their age helps children link their feelings to words, which makes it simpler for them to communicate safely.

Picture books that include familiar situations, clear facial expressions, and the identification of emotions are particularly beneficial for young children. Tools that encourage interaction, like emotion wheels or visual schedules, can be utilised during peaceful moments to examine various emotions and the responses that are anticipated.

Guidelines for Emotional Learning Resources

  • Choose age-appropriate, culturally aligned materials
  • Focus on tools that promote empathy, communication, and reflection
  • Use books and visual aids to spark conversation, not replace it
  • Revisit materials regularly and embed them into daily routines

It is important to choose resources thoughtfully, making sure they align with the child’s growth stage and the family’s values. Books that demonstrate respectful behaviour, manage emotions, and provide peaceful solutions contribute to establishing a positive atmosphere. Parents should utilise these tools not as a substitute for communication, but to enhance it. Regular practice and gentle reminders are important for strengthening understanding over time.

Spiritual Insight

From an Islamic worldview, recognising and naming emotions is a step towards developing Taqwa, or self-awareness in front of Allah Almighty. The noble Quran guides believers to respond with patience and reflection even in moments of distress.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Aalai Imran (3), Verse 134:

…They suppress their anger; and are forgiving to people; and Allah (Almighty) loves those who are benevolent.

This verse promotes the idea of managing oneself while also recognising that strong feelings are a natural aspect of being human. Teaching children how to communicate their feelings of anger, sadness, or fear in a respectful manner is a way to respect their natural moral understanding.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 6125, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Make things easy for the people, and do not make it difficult for them, and make them calm (with glad tidings) and do not repulse (them).

Parents who utilise books and resources to support their children during these learning phases are establishing a strong basis for good character. These efforts help children build resilience in their everyday lives and foster a deeper understanding of Ihsan, which is the commitment to doing what is right, even in difficult situations.
