What are signs of iron deficiency in infants?

Parenting Perspective

Infants with iron deficiency manifest with pale skin, frequent infections, weight gain slowing, fatigue, poor appetite, and delays in development. Iron is essential for brain development, immune function, and oxygen delivery. Infants at birth have iron stores that start to decline after six months. If they are breastfed without supplementation of iron, they are predisposed to a higher risk of deficiency. Iron-fortified foods such as pureed meat, beans, lentils, and fortified cereals need to be introduced early on. If signs of deficiency are present, parents should seek advice from healthcare providers, as iron deficiency left untreated will result in long-term health issues.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Hadeed (57), Verse 25: ‘…And We (Allah Almighty) transmitted the iron (from the layers of trans universal existence) in which there is mighty power and benefits for mankind…’ It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1218, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Indeed, your blood, your property, and your honour are sacred.’ These references affirm the strength and benefit of iron, and the sanctity of the body, requiring that parents protect their children from deficiency and ensure essential nourishment.
