What are good sources of non-meat-based proteins?

Parenting Perspective

Some good non-meat-based protein sources are legumes (e.g., lentils, chickpeas, beans), tofu, tempeh, edamame, quinoa, nuts and seeds, milk and dairy products, and eggs. The plant, dairy, and egg foods contain essential amino acids for growth and development. A mix of these protein sources in meals can ensure the body gets enough proteins, particularly among children on vegetarian or vegan diets.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 172: ‘O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you…’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2380 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls.’ It is recorded in Sunan Abu Dawood, Hadith 3855, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Make use of medical treatment, for Allah Almighty has not made a disease without appointing a remedy for it, with the exception of one disease, namely old age.’ Incorporating a variety of non-meat-based protein sources into a child’s diet aligns with the Islamic emphasis on consuming wholesome and permissible (Halal) foods. By providing diverse protein options, parents can ensure their child’s nutritional needs are met in accordance with Islamic dietary guidelines.
