What are early signs of giftedness or advanced learning?

Parenting Perspective

Giftedness can appear in subtle and unexpected ways. A child may show early signs through an insatiable curiosity, asking questions that seem surprisingly deep or complex for their age. These children often grasp new concepts quickly, display a strong memory, and can sustain focus for long periods on topics that interest them. They might engage in imaginative play with rich detail, prefer the company of older children, or express emotions with unusual depth. Some exhibit early reading or numerical skills, while others may show a creative flair through art, music, or storytelling. It is important not to expect uniform excellence. Emotional intensity, sensitivity to fairness, and a strong internal drive are also common features. What matters most is not to label the child too early, but to create a nurturing environment that encourages exploration, respects their pace, and fosters resilience alongside their strengths.

Gifted children can feel misunderstood if their abilities are met with pressure rather than support. It is not their speed or performance that defines them, but how they interact with knowledge and experience.  Let them know that their value lies not just in achievement, but in character and effort. A thoughtful parent will focus on emotional security as much as intellectual stimulation, enabling a gifted child to grow with integrity and confidence.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Anbiyaa (21), Verse 79: ‘…And to each of them We bestowed (the power of) good judgement, and deep knowledge…’ This reminds us that wisdom and insight are divine endowments. They are not earned through mere effort alone but are a form of Rizq from Allah Almighty. When parents notice advanced learning in their child, it should spark gratitude and a sense of responsibility. It becomes a means to guide the child with sincerity and remind them of the Source of their gift.
It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2638a, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated: ‘People are like mines of gold and silver; the best of them in Jahiliyyah are the best of them in Islam, if they gain understanding.’ This Hadith Shareef reminds us that innate talent holds worth only when refined by knowledge and guided by values. Intelligence that serves others, honours truth, and remains humble is what Islam uplifts. Help your child grow into someone who uses their strengths to benefit others, to draw nearer to Allah Almighty, and to navigate the world with compassion and wisdom. True excellence is found in those who align brilliance with righteousness.
