Should teens take protein shakes or supplements?

Parenting Perspective

Teenagers should ideally get their protein from whole food and not from supplements. Although protein shakes and supplements are handy, they might have added sugars, artificial flavours, and other components that are not very healthy for developing bodies. Most teenagers can get enough protein through a normal diet that includes foods such as lean meat, milk, eggs, beans, and nuts. If a teenager is extremely active or has diet needs, it’s best to seek advice from a medical practitioner before supplementing.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 286: ‘Allah (Almighty) does not place any burden on any human being except that which is within his capacity…’ It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith, 2380 and Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘A human being fills no worse vessel than his stomach. It is sufficient for a human being to eat a few mouthfuls. It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 1952, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘No father gives a better gift to his children than good manners.’ Encouraging teens to obtain their nutrients from whole foods aligns with the Islamic principles of consuming pure and wholesome (Halal) sustenance. By focusing on a varied and balanced diet, parents can ensure their teen’s nutritional needs are met in accordance with Islamic dietary guidelines.
