Should teens take omega-3 supplements?

Parenting Perspective

It takes health knowledge and responsible planning to decide whether a teen should take omega-3 supplements. Omega-3 fatty acids support brain development, heart health, and overall wellbeing especially during teenage years. If your child does not eat enough omega-3-rich foods like fish, flaxseeds, or walnuts, a supplement may be helpful. However, ensure that the supplement is Halal-certified and free from pork-derived gelatine or alcohol-based processing. Plant-based capsules are widely available. Consult a qualified healthcare provider before starting any supplement to ensure it fits your teen’s needs. Islam encourages taking care of one’s health as part of stewardship of the body and seeking lawful, beneficial means to maintain it.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 168: ‘O mankind! Consume from the Earthe that which is lawful and pure (qualitative)…’ It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5199, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Your body has a right over you.’ It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 2204, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘There is a remedy for every malady, and when the remedy is applied to the disease it is cured with the permission of Allah, the Exalted and Glorious.’ These teachings show that when safe, Halal supplements are taken with intention and care to maintain health, this is a responsible, faith-aligned decision.
