Should I track my teen’s calorie intake?

Parenting Perspective

It requires equal balance of awareness, not fixation, to assist an adolescent’s nutrition. Instead of monitoring calories strictly, concentrate on quality and balance in food. Adolescents require energy for development, learning, and worshiping, so their diet must help them meet their needs, not hinder them. Support regular feeding with fruit, vegetables, protein, and whole grains. If weight, health problems, or eating disorders are an issue, seek advice from a medical professional. Islam promotes moderation, not excess nor deficiency. Highlight that food is a gift and a trust. Educate your teenager to be attentive to his/her hunger and fullness signals, and to eat with gratitude and awareness. Severe calorie monitoring can hurt emotional and spiritual well-being if it incites guilt or preoccupation.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Aa’raaf (7), Verse 31: ‘…And eat and drink and do not be extravagant (wasteful), as indeed, He (Allah Almighty) does not like extravagance.’ It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3349, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘The son of Adam does not fill a vessel worse than his stomach…’ It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 3605, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Eat and drink, give charity and wear clothes, as long as that does not involve any extravagance or vanity.’ These teachings show that Islam encourages mindful, moderate eating – not obsessive tracking – especially in youth.
