Should I start goal setting in the early years?

Parenting Perspective

Yes, introducing goal setting in the early years is not only possible but profoundly beneficial. The key is to frame goals in ways that are tangible, achievable, and developmentally appropriate. Toddlers and young children are naturally eager to learn and participate. When we guide them toward small, meaningful aims, such as reciting a short Dua, finishing a puzzle, pouring water independently, or sharing toys with a sibling, we begin cultivating initiative, perseverance, and self-worth.

Early goal setting is not about pressure or performance. Rather, it is about planting the idea that effort leads to growth and that every small success is a step toward something greater. Use visual aids, such as sticker charts or simple checklists with pictures, to track progress. These make abstract goals more concrete and give children a sense of ownership. For example, a child working towards saying ‘Bismillah’ before meals can be praised each time they remember, and a small sticker or token can reinforce the achievement.

Setting goals also strengthens executive function skills. These include planning, task completion, impulse control, and working memory, all vital tools for learning, emotional regulation, and daily life. A goal as simple as putting on shoes before going outside helps a child practice sequencing, timing, and responsibility. Repeating these small actions within the context of a loving, structured environment builds confidence and inner discipline.

Goal setting, when introduced with kindness and realism, also nurtures connection. Working toward something together, whether memorising Surahs, growing a plant, or helping around the house, creates a shared sense of purpose. These habits gently lay the groundwork for future motivation, resilience, and leadership.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Ankaboot (29), Verse 69: ‘And those people that endeavour (to please) Us (Allah Almighty); so, We (Allah Almighty) shall indeed, guide them (to those pathways) that lead to Us…’ This verse assures us that effort in the right direction, no matter how humble, opens the door to divine guidance and support. It affirms the value of striving and taking intentional steps toward growth.

It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 2641, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Actions are judged by intentions.’ When a child sets a goal, even something as small as saying Salam with kindness, and they try sincerely, that intention holds spiritual weight. Teaching children to aim, to hope, and to take steps toward betterment is not just good parenting; it is a way of planting seeds of barakah in their hearts and habits.

Early goal setting, grounded in faith and framed with love, fosters both the character and clarity that carry a child through life. It becomes a spiritual exercise in intention, trust, and joyful striving, all values that are deeply woven into the fabric of Islamic living.
