Understand the Root Cause

Ask yourself what exactly is making your child struggle. Is it the school environment, unmet special educational needs, the teaching style, bullying or perhaps a lack of understanding from staff? Think about whether all possible supports have already been tried. Have you had calm SEN meetings, put new strategies in place, adjusted routines or asked for a different teacher if that might help?

Talk Openly with Your Child

If your child is old enough, talk openly with them about how they feel. Ask what they think would help them feel happier and safer at school. Keep clear notes of what you have done so far and whether anything is improving.

Planning a Potential Move

A new school can bring hope but may also bring new challenges, such as unfamiliar routines, different teachers and fresh expectations. If you feel that your child’s emotional or learning needs are simply not being met despite your best efforts, then moving schools can be the right choice, but it is best to plan carefully.

Visit potential new schools, meet the staff and ask clear questions about how they would support your child’s specific needs. Take your time to make sure it feels right. A well-planned change, done calmly and with your child’s comfort in mind, is far more likely to bring the stability and care they need to flourish. Remember, you know your child best and your love and patience will guide you to the right decision.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, parents are trusted with the responsibility to make the best choices they can, using the knowledge and resources they have. Moving a child to a new school can feel daunting, but it can also be a way of seeking what is best for their growth and well-being.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Talaq (65), Verse 3:

And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him. ‘

This Ayah brings comfort when decisions feel heavy, it reminds us that if we do our best and place our trust in Allah Almighty, He will make a way forward, even when the path feels uncertain.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah Almighty will make the path to Paradise easy for him.

This Hadith Shareef reminds us that your sincere effort to secure the right learning environment is a noble path, rewarded by Allah Almighty. Make sincere Dua for guidance, Istikhara can be a beautiful way to seek clarity when the choice feels overwhelming. Trust that Allah Almighty knows what is hidden and will open the door that brings the most Barakah for your child’s education, confidence and faith. Keep your intention pure, your heart open and your Tawakkul strong, He will never waste the effort of a parent who acts with sincere love and hope.
