Should I give my baby organic food?

Parenting Perspective

Organic foods are cultivated without the use of synthetic pesticides, fertilisers, or genetically modified organisms, and some parents choose them to minimise exposure to these chemicals. Though organic food may have fewer chemicals used on them, both organic and non-organic fruits and vegetables are nutritionally identical. The most important thing is to offer your baby a variety of fresh, wholesome, and nutritious foods, organic or conventional. All produce should be washed thoroughly to help reduce residue. Organic food may be more costly, and families should not feel that they must do this if it is not affordable. Islamic teaching emphasises what is Tayyib (Pure, wholesome) and Halal, and therefore the emphasis must be on safe, lawful, and nutritious feeding.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Baqarah (2), Verse 172: ‘O you who are believers, consume from amongst that which is purified, which We (Allah Almighty) have provided for you; and be grateful to Allah (Almighty), if you (truly) worship (Allah Almighty) exclusively.’ It is recorded in Jami’ Tirmidhi, Hadith 2518, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt.’ These are the attributes of choosing clean, healthy foods and avoiding doubtful or harmful ingredients when possible.
