Should I get a private assessment if the wait is too long?

Parenting Perspective

The Pros and Cons of a Private Assessment

Long waiting lists can leave parents feeling helpless, especially when your child needs answers and support now. Paying for a private assessment is a personal choice and will depend on what feels right for your family’s situation. One of the biggest benefits of going private is speed, as many private specialists can offer appointments much sooner than NHS services.

Due Diligence: Checking Qualifications and Setting Goals

However, private assessments can be costly, and the quality can vary. It is always wise to check the assessor’s qualifications and make sure their reports will be accepted by your child’s school or the local authority. If you do decide to pay for a private assessment, be clear about what you want to gain from it. A diagnosis on its own does not guarantee extra help, it needs to include clear, practical recommendations that teachers or therapists can use to support your child.

What to Do While You Wait

If a private assessment is not possible for you, focus on what you can do while you wait. Keep good records of your child’s challenges and what helps. Use strategies at home and work closely with teachers to adjust support where you can.

Remember, there is no shame in choosing the path that feels best for your child and your family. Some families decide to wait for an NHS diagnosis because it often carries more weight with local services. Trust that you know your child’s needs better than anyone else. Seek advice, weigh your options with care and make the choice that brings you peace of mind.

Spiritual Insight

In Islam, we are reminded that all Rizq, including money, time, and guidance, is provided by Allah Almighty with wisdom and mercy. Deciding whether to pay for a private assessment can feel stressful but remember that seeking clarity for your child’s well-being is a form of Ibadah when done with sincere intention.

Allah Almighty states in the noble Quran at Surah Al Talaq (65), Verse 3:

And whoever relies upon Allah, then He is sufficient for him. ‘

This Ayah reassures you that when you do your best and place your trust in Allah Almighty, He will make a way forward, even when resources feel tight.

It is recorded in Jami Tirmidhi, Hadith 2646, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ stated:

Whoever treads a path in search of knowledge, Allah Almighty will make the path to Paradise easy for him.

This Hadith Shareef reminds us that every step to understand your child better is rewarded. Make sincere Dua for Barakah in your finances if you choose to go private, or for Sabr and hope if you wait for the NHS. Be open to the doors Allah Almighty may open unexpectedly. Know that whatever path you choose, your patient effort and trust in His plan are never wasted. May He grant you clarity, ease and the best outcome for your child’s future.
