Should I be concerned about food dyes and additives?

Parenting Perspective

Yes, additives and food dyes can be problematic for health, particularly in young children. Certain artificial colourants and preservatives have been shown to be associated with hyperactivity, allergies, and other negative effects. Toddlers’ systems are more susceptible to chemicals. It is sensible, then, to reduce foods containing artificial colourants, flavour enhancers, or preservatives from their diet. Selecting whole, unprocessed foods and cooking meals at home minimizes exposure. When purchasing packaged food, be a critical reader of labels and choose products containing natural ingredients and no added artificial compounds. Teach children to appreciate natural flavours and healthy foods.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Aa’raaf (7), Verse 31: ‘…And eat and drink and do not be extravagant (wasteful), as indeed, He (Allah Almighty) does not like extravagance.’ It is recorded in Sunan Ibn Majah, Hadith 2340, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘There should be neither harming nor reciprocating harm.’ It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1015, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Allah Almighty is pure and accepts only that which is pure.’ These teachings urge moderation and caution, reinforcing the need to avoid harmful substances like artificial additives for the health and wellbeing of children.
