Should I avoid sugar completely in the first year?

Parenting Perspective

Yes, sugar must be completely avoided for a baby’s first year. Added sugars do not provide any nutritional benefits and contribute to obesity, tooth decay, and future poor eating habits. The natural sugars in fruits and vegetables are fine. Steer clear of sweets, sweetened beverages, and processed foods. This gives babies a healthy start and they will learn to enjoy wholesome, nutritious foods. Early learning to eat in moderation promotes a healthier future.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Furqaan (25), Verse 67: ‘And it is those people that do not spend extravagantly and are not miserly; and (act in such a way) that is a balanced format between these two (extreme characteristics).’ It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 6465, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘The most beloved deeds to Allah Almighty are those that are most consistent, even if they are few.’ Applying moderation, especially in diet, ensures consistency in health and discipline, in line with the values of Islam.
