Should I avoid gluten or dairy even if my child is not allergic to these?

Parenting Perspective

Excluding gluten or dairy for non-medical reasons isn’t advisable since both contain important nutrients the child needs. Glutinous grains are rich in fibre, B vitamins, and energy, while dairy serves as a major source of calcium, protein, and vitamin D necessary for bone development. Deleting them unjustifiably results in nutritional deficiencies and lessens variety in the diet. Unless an allergy or intolerance is diagnosed by a healthcare practitioner, children can have gluten and dairy in moderation as part of a healthy diet. Watching the child’s response to these foods and taking medical advice if symptoms occur will mean the right dietary choices are made. Having a varied, nutrient-dense diet promotes growth and health.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Maaidah (5), Verse 88: ‘And consume from that nourishment (which has been provided) for you from Allah (Almighty), (which is) clearly lawful and absolute purification…’ It is recorded in Sahih Muslim, Hadith 1218, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Indeed, your blood, your property, and your honour are sacred.’ These references stress the importance of consuming what is lawful and good without unnecessary restriction, protecting the child’s health and honour.
