Is it okay if my child is underweight but active?

Parenting Perspective

An active underweight child who is achieving developmental milestones and with regular patterns of growth is not alarming. There are children with naturally higher metabolic rates or leaner physiology. More important is the child’s energy level, strength, immune function, and mental involvement. The parents need to evaluate whether the child is consuming adequate nutrient-dense food to maintain growth and activity. A balanced diet with protein, healthy fats, and whole grains is essential. If there are such symptoms as fatigue, repeated illness, or growth retardation, it is best to consult a paediatrician. Focus must be on health, and not on weight.

Spiritual Insight

Allah Almighty says in the noble Quran at Surah Al Teen (95), Verse 4: ‘Indeed, We (Allah Almighty) have created mankind with the best (designed) specification’ It is recorded in Sahih Bukhari, Hadith 5774, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘Your body has a right over you.’ It is recorded in Musnad Ahmad, Hadith 38, that holy Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said: ‘O people, the people are not given anything better in this world than certainty of faith and well-being, so ask Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, for them.’ The noble Quran and Hadith promote honouring the body and maintaining good health, not conforming to specific body types. If the child is healthy, energetic, and thriving, being lean is not a fault but a variation within their design as created by Allah Almighty.
